Education in Integrative Medicine

The Center is involved with the Education Working Group of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine. The principal focus of the Education Working Group is to incorporate the field of integrative medicine into the curriculum of medical schools throughout the country. The Center’s 4th Year Course is included as an education model at UCLA.

Education Programs

The UCLA Center for East-West Medicine offers training programs in integrative East-West medicine, Chinese medicine, and conventional medicine for health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Through these programs, the Center aims to develop, implement, evaluate, and disseminate theoretical, scientific and clinical foundations for a new healthcare paradigm that offers a patient-centered, safe and effective integration of Western medicine and Chinese Medicine.

Training objectives of knowledge, skills and attitudes in integrative East-West medicine require more than proficiency in two bodies of medicine. Through personal experience and access to an integrative medical clinic with a large patient population, trainees learn how to add value to their practice of medicine through synergism of two systems of medicine.

These training programs are designed to make a profound transformation of how the trainees approach their own health, their patients, and problem solving. The training programs emphasize student-centered approaches with learning by demonstration, hands on activities, student questioning, class discussion, and reflective learning.
