Medical Students

ME 644D Integrative East-West Medicine (First Year Medical Student Course)

Since 1994, this course has been recognized by UCLA students and faculty as one of the best elective courses. ME 644D is a 16 hour (8 weeks) introductory course where students are exposed to theories and concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine through didactics and hands-on demonstrations and practices. The course is designed with the objective of stimulating students to think in broader terms of healthcare possibilities using a combination of case discussion, demonstration, and interaction among students and faculty. We will focus the discussion on paradigms of medicine and will compare western medical model with complementary medical approaches (especially Traditional Chinese Medicine). We will further explore the benefits of integrating East and West medical models.

ME 207.01 Integrative East-West Medicine (Fourth Year Medical Student Intensive Clinical Clerkship)

ME 207.01 is a two-week, 80 hour intensive course where students are exposed to specific Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic and therapeutic tools through demonstrations and hands-on practices. The course is designed to highlight, compare, and contrast key principles of both conventional western and Traditional Chinese Medical paradigms in a relatively short period of time. Through case work-ups, patient interviews, case discussions with faculty, and hands-on learning, students are exposed to TCM therapeutic approaches such as acupressure and acupuncture, dietary and herbal supplements, and Tai-Chi/Qi-Gong exercises. Emphasis is placed on health promotion and disease prevention, stressing the integrity of the human body and its relationship with the social and natural environments, including the effects of physical, nutritional, psychosocial, and genetic factors on health and disease. Students are taught how to use therapeutic principles to match and guide the selection of the appropriate treatments for each individual patient. At the end of two weeks students are expected to present a patient case using an integrative East-West approach.
