China Initiative
In the mid-1950s, a major effort was launched in China to train Western physicians in Chinese medicine. The outcome was the development of integrative East-West medical approaches to 37 medical disciplines. While integrative medicine is safe and cost-effective, its adoption on an international scale has been limited for a number of reasons. First, the scientific efficacy of Chinese and integrative medicine has yet to be widely researched using a biomedical model; there will remain limitations to its acceptance until more is done in this area. It is important to continue ongoing scientific research and clinical trials to provide proof of efficacy. Yet it would be an enormous oversight for health professionals worldwide to not have access to the vast resources in this field in Chinese due to language and cultural barriers.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hui has sought to train global leaders to transform healthcare internationally through the development and dissemination of the integrative East-West health paradigm. One of the most daunting challenges in developing the field of integrative medicine is the lack of available high-quality, bi-lingual source materials. The UCLA Center for East-West Medicine has made it a priority to meet this challenge by launching an ambitious China Initiative and has undertaken the following projects:
- the UCLA Information Center for East-West Medicine
- the Visual History Project
- Visiting Professors Program
- Visiting Scholars Program
- Publication Series
