China Initiative
Book Series
As part of the UCLA Center for East West Medicine’s mission to offer professional and public education programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and integrative East-West medicine, the Center is unrolling an ambitious new book series in East-West medicine. This book series is modeled after the course material used to teach fourth-year UCLA medical students at the Center.
The first book of the series, Integrative Medicine in the United States has already been completed. Center members prepared a comprehensive literature review to identify significant publications from the past ten years in areas such as public health and policy, biomedicine, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), acupuncture, herbal medicine, mind-body medicine, pain, cancer, hypertension, and aging. The works selected were drawn from a broad range of media (e.g., medical journals, magazines, textbooks). The book includes research, it showcases influential figures and institutions in the medical community, and provides perspective on issues such as mind-body therapies. A Center team with expertise in medicine, complementary and alternative medicine, scientific and creative writing, and English as a second language has annotated, condensed, and summarized sources, and created a list of learning objectives for each passage related to language, issues in healthcare, and critical reading. This textbook combines an exceptional selection of writings never before brought together and is broken down to be accessible by experts in the field. The second book of the series, “Case Studies in Integrative East-West Medicine (working title),” is already underway.
Beginning in China, the book series will be used in classroom instruction to teach students of medicine, medical-English, and integrative medicine about the patient-centered model of care practiced at the Center. Here in the U.S., the series will be used at the Center to teach medical students, acupuncturists, and patients, and could be used nationally for classroom instruction at medical schools, schools of alternative medicine, as well as undergraduate and graduate programs. The series will also be available to members of the general public with an active interest in health care. This book series will extend the reach of the Center’s professional and public education to train future leaders in healthcare on a global scale.
