December

  1. Ka-Kit Hui, MD presented a keynote address to an international audience gathered at “Harmonisation of Traditional and Modern Medicine: An International Symposium,” convened by RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, December 12-14, 2005. Recently designated a WHO Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine, RMIT University’s Division of Chinese Medicine launched the Symposium to address “issues critical to public safety and confidence in herbal medicine, including quality assurance, efficacy, safety, developing a scientific evidence base for herbal therapies, education of healthcare practitioners and consumers, and regulation of herbal medicine.” Dr. Ming Dong Li also attended the conference

  1. Our annual conference featured on "Optimizing the Care of Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors" was held in Northwest Auditorium on Nov. 30, 2005.


  2. Edzard Ernst, MD, PhD, FRCP(Edin.), Professor of Complementary Medicine at th University of Exeter's Peninsula Medical School, came to Los Angeles during the last week in Novemeber. He was invited by Dr. Hui to deliever a keynot speach at the Center's annual conference.

July

  1. On July 29, 2005, Ruiquan Li, Ph.D., L.Ac., O.M.D., delivered a presentation to the Center staff on Traditional Chinese Medicine and its applications in the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Li has the distinction of being the first person ever in China to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine ophthalmology.


  2. Researchers at the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine have conducted a UCLA IRB-approved clinical research study on the effectiveness of Tai Chi in improving the quality of life of patients with tension headaches. Participants experienced a significant improvement in general health and reduction in pain. Ryan Abbott, the Principal Investigator of the study, presented his conclusions to the Center on July 27, 2005.


  3. For the second year, the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine has offered its Limited Fellowship Course. This course instructs incoming Fellows to the Center as well as physicians outside UCLA about the Center’s approach to patient care. This includes learning an overview of integrative East-West medicine, how the various patients are diagnosed and treated, and the different forms of treatment used by our physicians (including acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and trigger point injections). The course runs from July 1 – July 29, 2005.


  4. Our second Grand Rounds was held on July 14, 2005. The guest speaker, Dr. Aviad Haramati, Director of Medical Education at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, presented “Lessons Learned from the Educational Initiative in CAM at the Georgetown University School of Medicine”, an inspirational talk that showed concrete ways to integrate CAM courses into a main medical school curriculum.
