Visiting Professor - Jisheng Han
Dr. Han joined the Beijing Medical University as a full Professor of Physiology in 1962. He headed the Department of Physiology from 1983 until 1993, when he became the director of the Neuroscience Research Institute and of the Key Laboratory of Neuroscience Research of the Chinese Ministry of Health. He has been a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1993. His major scientific interest has been the neurochemical mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia. He clarified the electroacupuncture-induced frequency-dependent release of neuropeptides in the central nervous system, and the functional balance of opioid and anti-opioid peptides which determines the efficacy of acupuncture analgesia.
Dr. Han has also invented a small device, Han's Acupoint Nerve Stimulator, to stimulate key acupuncture points without the use of needles. In recent years, he has found this technology helpful in treating addiction as well as pain in China. He has also helped develop pain management as a medical specialty in China.
During his 3-day visit at UCLA, he will be giving two public lectures:
Title: Acupuncture for the Treatment of Pain and Drug Addiction: Neurochemical Mechanisms
Date: 4:00 PM - 5 PM, May 12, 2008
Location: Gonda Conference Room, 1357 Gonda Building, UCLA
Content Highlight:
- Electro-acupuncture (EA) for acute pain and chronic pain
- EA for opioid dependence: physical and psychic dependence
- Frequency dependent release of neuropeptides in CNS
- Strengthening of homeostasis as the key of acupuncture treatment
This public lecture is jointly presented by UCLA Center for East-West Medicine and the Brain Research Institute and co-sponsored by the UCLA Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine.
Title: 40 Years of Acupuncture Research: Acupuncture Mechanisms and Their Application in Medical Practice
Date: 6:45 PM - 8:30 PM, May 14, 2008. Reception will follow.
Location: RPB Auditorium, Jules Stein Institute, UCLA
Introduced by :Ka-Kit Hui, MD, Wallis Annenberg Professor In Integrative East-West Medicine, Founder and Director, UCLA Center for East-West Medicine
