The Breast Cancer Survivor Study now Recruits Participants
The UCLA Center for East West Medicine is currently recruiting breast cancer survivors to participate in a clinical trial regarding fatigue. The research project is led by Ka Kit Hui, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Director of UCLA Center for East West Medicine. Potential participants are those who are:
- Between the age of 18 and 65
- In a stable clinical conditiion
- Experience fatigue
Eligibility will be determined after a free clinical intake exam offered by Eleanor Axe, M.D., Ph.D. Prior to the exam, potential participants will complete a screening appointment by telephone (approximately 5 minutes) and in-person screening appointment, which consists of completing an Informed Consent form and several questionnaires (approximately 1 hour).
Participants will be placed into one of two treatment groups by a method of random allocation. One group will receive eight acupuncture sessions, with the first four including a one-hour patient education session. The other group will participate in a specially-designed half-day workshop that will empower breast cancer survivors to self-administer Integrative East-West Medicine so as to relieve fatigue. All participants will complete a clinical exit exam that will take place approximately 10 weeks after the initial clinical intake exam and complete the second and final round of research questionnaires.
The primary research questionnaire is a brief, standardized measure of fatigue that takes about 5 minutes to complete. If the results are promising, they will lend further credibility to the idea that a combination of acupuncture and patient education will indeed improve fatigue.
